Getting Around, Isle of Wight Travel and Transportation (Isle of Wight, England)



Isle of Wight Travel and TransportThe Isle of Wight is well served by the public transport system, which includes an excellent network of buses and trains, providing the Isle of Wight with good connections throughout. The Isle of Wight has many interesting towns, villages, tourist attractions and important landmarks, and many visitors on the Isle of Wight travel around the Isle of Wight, to the numerous coastal areas and beaches.

Travel by car is often the preferred method of transport for excursions around the Isle of Wight and it is relatively easy to travel around the Isle of Wight area by car. There are a number of major roads situated throughout the Isle of Wight, which provide fast and convenient routes when travelling around the Isle of Wight.




Isle of Wight Travel by Airports - Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight has two small private airports, Sandown Airport and Bembridge Airport (BBP), where aircraft, including planes and helicopters, can be chartered. Daily pleasure trips over the Isle of Wight are also provided at the island's airports. Other more major airports nearby the Isle of Wight include Southampton Airport (SOU), Bournemouth Airport (BOH) and the following London Airports, all of which are within easy reach of the Isle of Wight, being less than two hours away by car.

London Airports, including London Heathrow Airport (LHR), London Gatwick Airport (LGW), London Stansted Airport (STN) and London City Airport (LCY) are also within easy travelling distance of the Isle of Wight, by either train, coach or car.

With almost 400 ferry and hovercraft crossings each day, it is easy to reach to Isle of Wight from mainland. Many of the ferries transport cars and there are also some high-speed passenger ferries which ensure a fast arrival.

Connecting bus services and taxis are readily available at the Isle of Wight's ports. The three main Isle of Wight ferry and hovercraft operators are:

    The high-speed Hovertravel passenger hovercraft are one of the quickest ways to reach the Isle of Wight and travel from Portsmouth to Ryde in just 9 minutes

    Red Funnel ferries travel to the East Cowes area of the Isle of Wight from Southampton in around 55 minutes. Other Red Funnel ferry services include a high-speed ferry which travels from Southampton to West Cowes in just 25 minutes

    Wightlink ferries provide a 24-hour services and travel from Portsmouth to Fishbourne in around 40 minutes, and also from Portsmouth to Lymington in around 30 minutes. Other Wightlink services include a high-speed passenger catamaran, which travels from Portsmouth to Ryde in just 15 minutes

The Isle of Wight is served by a number of major roads, which connect the island's towns, villages and different regions. Driving around the Isle of Wight is very easy and many tourists staying in Isle of Wight choose to rent cars. These are one the most best ways to travel on the Isle of Wight, providing a convenient method of transport when exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby towns. There are plenty of parking garages and off-street parking areas available throughout Isle of Wight, and a number of car rental outlets in the larger towns.

Much of the Isle of Wight is well pedestrianized and one of the best ways to travel around the towns on the Isle of Wight is by foot. This is an excellent way to see some of the Isle of Wight's numerous tourist attractions, museums, galleries and landmarks. Finding your way around the towns on the Isle of Wight is very straightforward and many of the Isle of Wight's major sights and attractions are within easy walking distance of each other in towns such as Cowes, Newport, Ryde and Ventnor.

The Isle of Wight bus system is operated by Southern Vectis buses and covers the island well. Buses on Isle of Wight are heavily used by both locals and tourists alike and provide a particularly inexpensive way to travel around the Isle of Wight's towns and coastal areas. Isle of Wight buses and coaches travel to many of the island's towns, including Arreton, Brighstone, Calbourne, Chessell, Cowes, Fishbourne, Godshill, Mottistone, Newport, Ryde, Sandown and Yarmouth. Bus passes, known as 'Rovers Tickets' are available for set periods and these can be particularly convenient when travelling around the Isle of Wight. Most buses on the Isle of Wight depart from the main bus station in Cowes, and there are also bus stops throughout the Isle of Wight, with bus timetables and route information.

Various coach companies offer excursions around the Isle of Wight and travel to many of the island's towns and villages.

The Isle of Wight's train network, known simply as the 'Island Line', travels from Ryde Pierhead to Shanklin. With intermediate train stations at Ryde Esplanade, St. John's, Smallbrook Junction and Lake, there are usually two trains every hour, with 'Rover Tickets' available for set periods, providing useful train travel discount on the Isle of Wight.

Taxis on the Isle of Wight are one of the most convenient ways to travel around the Isle of Wight towns and are usually reasonably priced. They can be easily caught from taxi ranks in the larger towns and in quieter areas of the Isle of Wight, taxis can be ordered by telephone and there are a number of reputable taxi firms that your hotel can recommend. Additional taxi charges on the Isle of Wight can be made for luggage, travel late at night, extra passengers and travel on public holidays.

Travel by Bicycle - Isle of Wight
Bicycles are a popular way to travel around recreational areas of the Isle of Wight in particular, and much of the Isle of Wight is generally very flat, with many scenic cycle paths and trails. The Isle of Wight has a number of bicycle rental shops available in the larger towns on the Isle of Wight.
